HYDERABAD: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) on Friday released its first list of 12 candidates for the West Bengal Assembly elections in Muslim-majority constituencies across Murshidabad, Birbhum, Maldah, and North 24 Parganas districts.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi had earlier declared the party's intent to contest aggressively in West Bengal, forming a strategic alliance with Humayun Kabir's Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) to consolidate Muslim votes for the West Bengal elections schedule for April 23 and 29. The move has drawn sharp criticism from Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, who accused AIMIM of splitting the anti-BJP vote and labelled it a "BJP ploy" to weaken the secular forces.

AIMIM's past forays in West Bengal, including contesting from seven seats in 2021, and failed to win any seat.

From Barasat, AIMIM has selected Monaem Sardar, with Mehbub Alam contesting from Karandighi. Asadul Sk has been nominated from Suti, Shabana Parvin from Basirhat South, and Asik Raj Mmondal from Habra.
