Excise department, Kochi Corporation to hold raids ahead of Onam

The decision was taken in a meeting held by the corporation officials along with the Excise officials.

Kochi: With three weeks to the Onam festival, the Excise department and Kochi Corporation on Monday decided to conduct raids and inspections in the district to prevent the flow of illicit liquor and narcotic drugs to the district.

It is learnt that a special squad will be formed by the Excise department and Health department of the Municipal Corpor-ation together for the search operations. The decision was taken in a meeting held by the corporation officials along with the Excise officials.

On this, Kochi Mayor Soumini Jain demanded the Excise officials to check the school vehicles which are running thro-ugh the city. “A special squad should be formed to check the school vehicles alone,” Ms. Jain said.

However, the Excise department has decided to intensify patrolling across the district. “We will conduct a detailed check on every Beverage outlets to prevent the sale of illicit liquor,” an official with the Excise department said.

Further, frequent checks on small shops will be conducted. Besides this, patrolling of vehicles has been intensified along key roads, especially during nights, the officials said.
