Drug abuse among the young in cities like Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Hyderabad also have spiked over the years.

According to the data, out of 18,000 narcotic cases registered in the state in the last six months, 2,094 cases were registered in the district making it the second top district in the list behind Ernakulam

Hyderabad: Telangana and Andhra Pradesh contribute significantly to the total number of drug trafficking and illicit liquor cases in the country. While both states recorded around 6,000 ID liquor trafficking cases in a year, around 770 cases in drug trafficking were reported in a year in TS, the National Crime Records Bureau revealed.

Though enforcement is on in full swing authorities have fully ignored the most important factor in the fight against drugs and hooch — public awareness. Unlike Punjab  and  Karnataka, TS and AP are yet to come up with a mechanism to educate people on drugs and hooch.

In Telangana, drug manufacturers and traffickers lurk in the corners of Hyderabad. Besides the domestic trade they even supply drugs like Methamphetamine, Ketamine, Ephedrine and Amphetamine to international drug cartels via Chennai and Mumbai.  The low price of ingredients and the easy access to secret manufacturing units make drug manufacturers choose Hyderabad.

Drug abuse among the young in cities like Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Hyderabad also have spiked over the years.

While the Narcotic Control Bureau recently started an online awareness campaign against drug users in Karnataka's cities no agencies in AP or TS have started a similar campaign.

Meanwhile, unlike AP, Telangana enforcement agencies managed to build a functioning mechanism to curb the production and distribution of hooch.

"In just two years, over 80 persons who were controlling the illicit liquor rackets were booked under the PD act thus breaking the backbone of organised gangs. Over 70,000 others were bound over by the agency bringing the manufacturing of ID liquor in the state to a complete halt. Black jaggery, the crucial raw material used in hooch, was also made unavailable in the state," commissioner of excise department Dr R.V. Chandravadan said.
