NEW DELHI: Amid protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a Delhi Ramlila committee has decided to burn a 30-foot cockroach effigy alongside those of Ravan, Kumbhkaran and Meghnad this Dasara.

The Shri Keshav Ramlila Committee, headed by BJP MLA Ashok Goel, described the cockroach as “a manifestation of filth”, but maintained that the decision had no connection with any political movement.

The move comes as CJP activists have been protesting against alleged irregularities in electoral roll revisions and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The cockroach has become closely associated with the youth-led outfit, raising the possibility of controversy over the committee's decision.

The committee organises its annual Ramlila at Netaji Subhash Place in Pitampura.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta attended its inaugural celebrations on October 11, while BJP MP Manoj Tiwari participated in Wednesday's programme, singing devotional songs and reciting passages from the Ramayana.

Singer Shivani Kashyap is scheduled to perform on Friday.
