Uttar Pradesh police have registered a fresh FIR against jailed Samajwadi Party leader: NEW DELHIReports
NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh police have registered a fresh FIR against jailed Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan and his educational trust following an Enforcement Directorate investigation into alleged diversion of government funds for constructing Muhammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur.
The FIR, registered on Tuesday, names Khan, the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust, two private entities and others under provisions relating to cheating, criminal breach of trust, conspiracy and corruption.
The ED alleged that public funds meant for government projects were diverted to construction works at the privately run university.
According to the agency, an Income Tax Department valuation put the university's construction cost at ₹494.46 crore, while the trust declared capital expenditure of only ₹78.32 crore between 2013-14 and 2024-25, leaving ₹416.14 crore unexplained.
The ED had written to the Uttar Pradesh DGP on October 10, sharing its findings and seeking registration of a fresh case.
The agency is also examining more than 25 police cases linked to Khan as part of its money laundering investigation initiated in 2019. ED officials questioned Khan in Rampur jail on Tuesday.
