Raipur: A tribal woman in a Chhattisgarh village walked five km to a bank carrying her 90-year-old mother-in-law on her back to collect the monthly pension of Rs 500, given to the latter.

A video showing the woman walking with her nonagenarian mother-in-law on her back to the bank went viral on social media on Saturday.

The incident took place in the Mainpat block of Surguja district in north Chhattisgarh on Friday.

Sukhmaniya (55), a resident of Jangalpara village under Kunia area, was seen in the video walking by carrying her mother-in-law Sonwari on her back to the nearby branch of the Central Bank of India (CBI), five km away from her village, to collect the latter’s old age pension.

According to her, a ‘Bank Mitra’ (friend of bank) named Tapesh used to visit her home every month earlier to deliver the pension of her mother-in-law.

The ‘Bank Mitra’ stopped delivering the pension at her home for the last three months, leading her to carry her mother-in-law to the bank to collect the pension, she said.

She claimed that the old age pension of her mother-in-law was not released for the last three months due to processing of the KYC by the bank.

The bank promptly released the pending three months’ pension, which came to Rs 1,500, when she reached the branch, she said.

However, a senior officer of the bank said that the branch was not informed about it by the woman or her family members.

Had the bank been given prior information on the matter, an arrangement could have been made to deliver the money at her home through a ‘Bank Mitra’, the officer said, unwilling to be quoted.

The bank officials told the woman that she need not come to the bank to collect the pension in future as the ‘Bank Mitra’ will deliver the money at her home.
