Rourkela: Twenty-nine faculty members of the National Institute of Technology-Rourkela (NIT-R) have figured in the latest global list of the top 2 per cent scientists, highlighting the institute’s growing research footprint across a wide range of disciplines.

A PhD graduate of NIT-R, Dr Srimanta Patra, who is currently a DST-INSPIRE faculty member at IIT Guwahati, has also featured in the list, taking the total number of researchers associated with the institute to 30.

The list, prepared by Stanford University professor John P A Ioannidis and his team and published by Elsevier through its Data Repository, ranks researchers on the basis of citation impact.

It uses a composite indicator that takes into account total citations, co-authorship-adjusted impact and the position of an author in research papers.

The database also considers indicators such as the h-index and other citation-based parameters to assess the influence and impact of individual researchers.

The NIT-R faculty members featured in the list represent a diverse range of academic disciplines, including life sciences, metallurgical and materials engineering, mathematics, chemical engineering, biotechnology and medical engineering, humanities and social sciences, ceramic engineering, food process engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, electronics and communication engineering, electrical engineering, physics and astronomy, civil engineering and mining engineering.

Among those featured are Surajit Das, Sujit Kumar Bhutia, Bankim Chandra Ray, Snehashish Chakraverty, Santanu Paria, Kunal Pal, Narayan Sethi, Ajit Behera, Balasubramanian P, Ritwik Sarkar, Mohd Khalid Gul, Siba Sankar Mahapatra, Harekrushna Sahoo and Sandhyarani Biswas.

Reacting to the recognition, NIT-R director Prof K Umamaheshwar Rao said the inclusion of 29 faculty members was a matter of pride for the institute and reflected the “quality, consistency and global relevance” of research being undertaken there.

He congratulated the researchers and said their work would continue to inspire students and young researchers.

The institute also said 19 researchers have been featured in the 2026 Stanford Top 2 per cent Scientists’ career-long category, reflecting sustained contributions to research and academia.
