KOLKATA: Two more Trinamul Congress workers lost their lives after suffering fatal injuries in the post-poll violence in two districts of West Bengal on Tuesday. They were Somnath Bhattacharya of Hooghly and Tapan Sikdar of Nadia. Bhattacharya was a resident of Polba Dadpur Block at Saptagram assembly constituency.

He and another party worker Srikanta Malik were assaulted by BJP workers on May 6. Bhattacharya was admitted to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries later. On the other hand, Sikdar was from Chakdah where he was thrashed by BJP workers on May 5. Sikdar was admitted to RGMCH where he lost his battle for life.

Condemning the killings, Diamond Harbour TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee posted on X-handle, “THE DEATH COUNT RISES, YET EVERY CRY FOR JUSTICE FALLS ON DEAF EARS…The grieving families ask a simple but chilling question - does supporting Trinamool Congress in Bengal under @BJP4India’s watch now invite violence, persecution, and death?”

He claimed, “Police - inactive. Courts - silent spectators. BJP Netas - busy celebrating. Prime Minister - planning his next foreign tour. Home Minister - completely missing in action. And amidst this shameful silence, ordinary people continue to suffer the consequences of BJP’s politics of VIOLENCE, VENGEANCE & UTTER LAWLESSNESS.”

Reacting to his allegations, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Rahul Sinha however said, “We have heard some loss of lives due to TMC faction feud. Our party workers were not involved in attacks on them. We have restrained them. Still four workers of our party were killed.”
