The Zika virus has wreaked havoc across the world with many health organisations claiming that the mosquito-borne illness has already become an endemic. Apart from triggering symptoms like mild fever, skin rash and conjunctivitis to muscle and joint pain and a headache, this illness is also linked to severe birth defects when infecting pregnant women.

The most common way to contract the Zika virus is via a bite from an Aedes mosquito. Hence, it is even more important to protect oneself from mosquito bites to lessen your chances of getting infected. Dermatologist Dr. Anjali Mahto reveals the top ways by which we become more susceptible to being bitten by mosquitoes and how we can prevent that, reports the Daily Mail.

1) Blood type

Research has revealed that certain blood types are more attractive to mosquitoes than others. In fact, a study conducted way back in 1972 claims that mosquitoes seem to prefer those with Type O blood. So, take extra care if that’s your blood type.

2) Carbon dioxide

As mosquitoes are attracted to exhaled carbon dioxide, they can detect their prey from even a distance of 50 metres away. Moreover, those that exhale more gas like for example, larger people, have greater chances of getting bitten.

3) Pregnancy

Again pregnant women are more likely to suffer from mosquito bites than their non-pregnant counterparts because they exhale relatively more carbon dioxide and have a higher resting body temperature.

4) Clothing colour

Dark colours such as black and navy blue attract mosquitoes which can use vision along with scent to find their targets. Therefore, it is advisable to dress in light colours such as white or pastels to be safe.
