Your face reflects who you are and making it glow is something that can be done at home. Yes, with do it yourself (DIY) face masks, you can take charge of how your face looks. Experts weigh in.

Glow Glamour

DIY face masks can be a delightful addition to your skincare routine, offering natural solutions to rejuvenate your skin’s youthful glow. Dr. Dinyar Workingboxwalla, skin guru and co-founder, Beauty by BiE says, “DIY face masks have been buzzing for a long time now and have become an integral part of our skincare routines. These do-it-yourself face masks are extremely nourishing, hydrating, and effective for your skin. They target all skin concerns from diminishing the signs of ageing like wrinkles, fine lines, sagging skin and dullness to treating hyperpigmentation and acne.”

Do it Right

DIY skincare recipes are one of the best ways to take care of yourself. You can control the quality of ingredients and ensure they are natural and good for your skin. However, there are a few things that must be kept in mind. When experimenting with new recipes, a patch test is always recommended to check for allergies and sensitivities. Hygiene and cleanliness are also important as whatever DIY recipe we make has direct contact for the skin. “Always wash your skin before applying DIY masks. After removing DIY masks, rinse with lukewarm water if required. I also strongly advise one to follow a routine, as consistency is key. You also need to identify one carrier oil which is nutritious and suits your skin. Hemp Seed Oil for one, is not only good for all skin types, but also an all-in-one oil for skin nutrition needs. It has an abundance of omega 6, Omega 3, vitamins, and more which enhances anti-aging and anti-acne properties; and makes skin soft and smooth,” explains Parivardhan Dangi, founder, Neoli Hemp Store.

Routine Route

DIY face masks can be an excellent addition to your skincare regimen. However, it is crucial to maintain consistency. Use these masks one to two times a week for noticeable improvements over time. Also, consider incorporating sunscreen into your daily routine, especially during the day, to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. Amritha Gaddam, founder and CEO, The Tribe Concepts lists a simple yet vital routine, “Begin with a clean face. Removing dirt and makeup beforehand ensures that your skin can absorb the mask’s benefits fully. Apply the mask evenly, making sure to avoid the delicate eye area. Allow the mask to work its magic during the specified duration. Take this time to unwind and practice self-care. After the recommended time, gently rinse off the mask with lukewarm water. Be careful not to scrub too vigorously. Finish up with a moisturiser to lock in the mask’s nourishing effects.”

Holistic Approach

Venturing into the DIY realm is not without its challenges. The term ‘natural’, while appealing, does not always translate to ‘safe’. “Every ingredient, even common kitchen staples, has its properties and potential risks. A patch test is, therefore, indispensable. Ensuring that utensils are impeccably clean is paramount to avoid contamination. Moreover, fresh ingredients, although potent, lack the preservatives found in store-bought products. This makes understanding storage and shelf-life critical,” says Saumya Agarwal, chief strategy officer, Aveil. Here are some masks for you to try.
