Ooty: Dr Somasundaram Jayaraman, head and principal scientist at the ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Research Centre, here, bagged global recognition and honours as he was listed among the top 2% scientists in the world by Stanford University in USA. He received the laurels for his significant contribution in the field of agriculture / agronomy and natural resource management.

An ace name in the arena of soil and water conservation studies, research and innovations, Dr. Somasundaram Jayaraman has more than 25 years of research experience in sustainable soil management and conservation agriculture (CA) practices vis-à-vis natural resource management.

Sustainable soil management (SSM) protects and enhances soil health to support crop productivity, water retention, and climate resilience without harming natural ecosystems. He focused a major part of his research in SSM that proved helpful in increasing soil organic matter, maintenance of soil cover, crop rotation practices and diversity and precise management of water and soil nutrients, besides erosion control measures that in turn, helps boost biological activity and plant nutrient availability for higher fertility and soil water security.

Dr Somasundaram Jayaraman

He has made significant contributions in conservation agricultural (CA) practices (no-tillage, crop residue retention and nitrogen application) which is an emerging sustainable farming system that protects soil from degradation, improves biodiversity, optimizes resources and climate resilience for enhancing soil carbon sequestration, soil health and crop productivity in western, central and southern India and also developing soil and water conservation measures for the Nilgiris region, besides imparting training on soil and water conservation measures and watershed management to the Nilgiris farmers. He also has rich experience of guiding postgraduate and doctoral degree students and other young scientists with an enviable record of more than 4,600 Google scholar citations to his name.
