Booker Prize 2026 Longlist Revealed: Past Winners Stuart and James Return
Elizabeth Strout has also been nominated for the third time on this list, with her latest work, The Things We Never Say.

The longlist for this year’s Booker Prize was announced on Tuesday, featuring a wide range of literary genres, from thrillers and dystopian science fiction to romance.
Two previous Booker Prize winners have once again made it to the prestigious list. Douglas Stuart and Marlon James, who won the award for Shuggie Bain and A Brief History of Seven Killings in 2020 and 2015 respectively, have been nominated again this year.
Elizabeth Strout has also been nominated for the third time on this list, with her latest work, The Things We Never Say.
Apart from these three established authors, the longlist includes several other writers competing for the prestigious award.
In a statement, Booker Prize 2026 judges’ chair Marie Beard said, "Every writer on our longlist brilliantly musters the power of words on the page to take the reader to new places, to see old places from new angles, and to change minds."
The Booker Prize is awarded annually for the best sustained work of long-form fiction written in English and published in the United Kingdom or Ireland. It is open to writers of any nationality and carries a prize of 50,000 pounds.
Authors who make it to the shortlist also receive a prize of 2,500 pounds each.
Established by publishers Tom Maschler and Graham C. Greene alongside the company Booker McConnell, the award was created to encourage readership and promote literary excellence on an international scale.
First established in 1968, the first Booker Prize was awarded in 1969 to P. H. Newby for his novel Something to Answer For.
Last year, David Szalay received the prize for his novel Flesh.
