Veteran South Actress Sowcar Janaki Dies At 94
Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki died on Friday at the age of 94. Her remains will be kept in Teynampet from 5 pm so that her fans and members of the film fraternity can pay their last respects.
Chennai: Veteran South actress Sowcar Janaki (94), who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chennai had died on Friday afternoon. The news was confirmed by Nadigar Sangam President Nassar.
“Legendary star Sowcar Janaki (94) passed away. Her mortal remains will be placed at Centoph Road, Teyampet, from 5 PM,” read his statement. The senior actress, who was seen in the 1950 Telugu movie Shavukaru (Sowcar) directed by LV Prasad, where she earned the title to her name as Sowcar Janaki, was undergoing treatment at Kauvery Hospital in the city.
According to reports, the actress was admitted around a week ago after developing respiratory problems. She had been receiving treatment at the hospital, but her condition became serious last night. Doctors then shifted her to the ICU and placed her on ventilator support, and she passed away at around 2 PM.
The actress received the Padma Shri in 2022 for her contribution to cinema spanning seven decades, during which she acted in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam films. Sowcar Janaki acted in over 450 films and also performed in over 300 stage shows in an illustrious film career spanning different roles as heroine, mother, grandmother, and supporting actress. She acted with almost all the legendary heroes of the South, including NTR, ANR, MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, Dr Raj Kumar, among others. The veteran actress was last seen in the Telugu film Anni Manchi Sakunamule in 2023, directed by BV Nandini Reddy.
