Telangana government— DC File

HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has approved the procurement of 3,000 MW of solar power integrated with 6,000 MWh of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity for 25 years through the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Limited (TGRedco).

The approval was issued through a GO by the energy department. The power will be procured through competitive bidding, with private developers selected to develop, finance, own and operate the projects. The state’s distribution licensees will purchase electricity at the tariff discovered through bidding.

According to the order, the decision was taken in view of the steady rise in Telangana’s peak electricity demand over the past decade. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has projected further growth due to rapid economic development, urban expansion, industrial growth, data centres, electric vehicles and major infrastructure initiatives including the Regional Ring Road, Future City and Telangana Rising 2047.

The government said solar energy is the least‑cost source of new renewable power available to the State. It noted that the CEA’s Resource Adequacy Study and the Telangana Clean and Green Energy Policy 2025 envisage the addition of 16,000 MW of solar capacity by 2030.

Solar generation is expected to reduce procurement costs by allowing thermal plants to back down during daytime hours. With battery storage, solar power can also be supplied during peak‑demand hours. The order cited recent Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) tenders to state that solar‑plus‑BESS tariffs are lower than thermal power tariffs.

The government directed TGRedco’s Vice‑Chairman and Managing Director to take necessary action for implementing the procurement. Standard bidding documents and guidelines issued by the Government of India and SECI will be adopted for the tender process.
