Costume designer Smriti Chauhan explained that the team intentionally dressed Khanna in a full black outfit to make him the clear focal point in the sequence, a strategy that has clearly paid off given its massive social media buzz.
Akshaye Khanna’s striking “Sher-E-Baloch” look from the viral Dhurandhar song "FA9LA" has become one of the most talked about fashion moments of the year, and the costume designer behind the group has now revealed the creative process that made it iconic.
Costume designer Smriti Chauhan explained that the team intentionally dressed Khanna in a full black outfit to make him the clear focal point in the sequence, a strategy that has clearly paid off given its massive social media buzz. The group blends traditional roots with contemporary flair: a black Balochi inspired pathani, a slim fit Chinese collar kurta with suede piping and matte black metallic buttons, and a light pashmina scarf that adds effortless movement and swagger.
While the overall outfit draws from Balochistan’s cultural elements, subtle design choices such as opting for a silk wool blend instead of pure silk and contrasting the black attire with a white pagdi (turban) helped Khanna’s look stand out amidst the vibrant visuals.
This blend of cultural homage and stylistic accuracy has set in motion Khanna’s Dhurandhar appearance into pop culture fame, inspiring countless recreations and cementing the Sher-E-Baloch persona as a fresh trend on social platforms worldwide.
