8 BJP men get lifer for murder

All of them are residents of Jawahar Colony in Palode

Thiruvananthapuram: Eight BJP workers have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the political murder they had committed before a decade at Palode.

The victim, Dilshad, was the DYFI local committee member at Palode and he was hacked to death on July 28, 2004. His fellow comrade Shibu also was lethally injured in attack.

The convicts who will now serve imprisonment are Gopakumar, Gouthakumar, Sudheesh, Sumesh, Gireesh, Rineesh Kumar, Biju alias Karunagam Biju and Sunilkumar alias Kunjumon.

All of them are residents of Jawahar Colony in Palode. Assistant Sessions Judge K P Indira also slapped a fine of Rs 5.5 lakh on them. Second accused Gopakumar will pay the fine of Rs 1.6  lakh and remaining others Rs 60,000 each. Of this, around Rs 3.95 lakh will be given as compensation to Dilshad’s parents and Rs 1 lakh to Shibu.

The suspects waylaid and attacked the victims owing to political rivalry. They were hacked over and over again and a particular hack on Dishad’s left thigh took his life.

The prosecution examined 36 witnesses and produced 10 material objects during the trial. Special Public Prosecutor Murukkumpuzha Vijayakumar and advocates, Suraj Nair, Anuroop Devarajan and Sunil K S appeared on behalf of the prosecution.
