Andhra Pradesh cancels Chittoor drinking water project
Rs 4,300-crore project was sanctioned by Congress regime
Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government has cancelled the Rs 4,300 crore Chittoor drinking water project taken up during the previous Congress government in the former Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy's regime.
To this effect state government issued orders (GOMS No 13) on Friday. The government said after considering various technical issues and the feasibility of having multiple sources of raw water and increased litres per capita per day (LPCD) for both urban and rural areas it has taken a comprehensive view of the whole situation and the various measures already initiated to complete Handri Niva Sujala Sravanthi and Galeru Nagari Sujala Sravanthi projects at the earliest so as to meet water needs of the Rayalaseema region.
The government said since no work is grounded so far it has been decided to revisit the entire scheme of Chittoor district drinking water supply project.
The Chittoor drinking water project was contemplated to supply safe drinking water to Tirupati including Tirumala, Chittoor, Madanapalli, Punganur and Palamaneru urban local bodies and rural areas of Chittoor district by transporting the water from Kandaleru reservoir in two phases covering 8,468 habitations in 46 mandals and five urban local bodies in phase I.
The government said that it has felt the necessity of solving the drinking water needs of both the rural and urban areas of the state and proposed to form a State Wide Water Grid for head works as well as transporting water to the edge of the local bodies including Panchayats as well as municipalities.
The vice -chairman and managing director of Infrastructure Corpor-ation of AP, has submitted a detailed report on the Chittoor district drinking water supply project which includes present status of the project, project feasibility and merits of the AP State Wide Water grid project.
He said in the Chittoor district drinking water supply project, the total water requirement considered was 6.61 TMC (out of which 1.44 TMC is meant for partial industrial needs) for 46 mandals and five municipalities at the rate of 135 LPCD for urban areas and 70 LPCD for rural areas whereas in Water Grid the total water requirement considered is 21.56 TMC (which includes 7.46 TMC for industry) and 150 LPCD for 66 mandals and eight municipalities.
