Thrissur: Palakkad MP M.B. Rajesh kicked up a row on Tuesday with a Facebook post claiming that there was an ‘unofficial/undeclared’ ban on serving beef in the Kerala Police Academy here.
Putting the state government and the home department in the dock on the matter, he said that it was another instance of the RSS agenda being implemented in the state.
For the past one-and-a-half years, beef has been struck off the menu of all five major canteens in the academy. One could easily find it out by going through the purchase register. Such a change occurred with the RSS strengthening its stance against the consumption of beef, the MP said.
All these could be read along with the recent threat to the Ernakulam-based Meat Products of India (MPI), the post says.
He told mediapersons that he had sent a letter to Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala seeking action against the officials behind the unofficial beef on ban.
He added that the ‘beef ban’ came in place after IG Suresh Raj Purohit took over as the director of the academy.
Officials at the academy said that beef was not being served in the academy for some time now. They said that it was removed from the menu after the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in cattle in the state.
Police Academy Director and Thrissur Range IG Suresh Raj Purohit expressed surprise over the MP coming up with such a Facebook post.
“I wish not to reply to this post by the MP. I was not aware of such a news break in the channels as I was busy with security arrangements for the local body polls in Palakkad. There are purchase committees at the academy to decide on the food served in the mess and I don’t have any role in such matters. As the one who has come up with such a claim, it is up to the MP to prove that there is an ‘unofficial ban’ on serving beef in the academy,” he said.
