KANNUR: Kannur district has achieved a major milestone in its financial inclusion programme for scheduled tribes in the district with the novel project ‘Gotra Sampada.’

As a result of the project, a total of 8,620 families under scheduled tribes living in 353 colonies have received bank accounts in nationalised banks. These families were also registered under three major central government schemes during the drive.

All the tribal families living in colonies have registered in Suraksha Bima Yojana (the government-backed accident insurance scheme), Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (government-backed Life insurance scheme) and Atal Pension Yojana (scheme for unorganised people to become part of the national pension system) as part of the Gotra Sampada project.

Speaking to DC, Kannur collector P. Bala Kiran said that the project aimed at bringing the tribals imto the mainstream of society. “With the help of 82 branches of 11 nationalised banks, we launched this programme. The project received positive response from the people,” he said.

“There is a tribal population not living in the colonies, but it is difficult to trace them and include them in the scheme,” he added.

The district administration has also organised awareness campaigns among tribals for the effective use of the projects they are enrolled into.
