Rains cause damages worth Rs 2.62 crore in Thiruvananthapuram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state has incurred loss worth Rs 2.62 crores in the heavy rain that lashed the state capital on Tuesday here.   On Wednesday, one more rain related death was reported in the district.

The deceased has been identified as Reji, 35, a native of Vellarada.  A house at Pattom was completely destroyed and the damage has been assessed at Rs 2 lakhs.

Around three relief camps have been opened as some of the low lying areas are still under water. The relief camps were opened at Kunnukuzhy, Kumarapuram and Varkala. As many as 15 families are living at Kunnukuzhy UP School while five families are at Kumarapuram school.

The torrential rain destroyed around 548 hectare of crops as well. According to authorities, the damage assessment is still on at the four taluks in the district including Thiruv ananthapuram, Chirayinkeezhu, Nedumangad and Neyyatinkara. 

The authorities said that the loss assessed was tentative and is likely to go up after damage assessments is carried out by respective village officers.

Several houses were partially destroyed at Varkala, Nedumangad, Kattakada and Vilappil.  As many as 10 cars and 6 autorickshaws were totally marooned in storm water at Thampanoor.
