Painting the town red

Abhi took his brush and put a spot of paint on the girl holding him up. The little boy was painting a wall of the H₂O Rehab and Facilitation Centre at Karyavattom.

With the help of a few architecture students from the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, and a few young artists from Toonz Animations, the event was organised by Young Indians Trivandrum and supported by Santha Paint House.

Jolly Johnson, who runs H₂O, stood watching the children of her institute as they painted the walls.

“Do you see that little girl Ponnu? She used to bite her own hands and injure herself,” she said.

The little girl with a bandaged left hand painted with her right hand, as she clutched on to her mother, a nursery teacher. “It is these parents who come forward to such ventures that need all the encouraging they can get.”

“We had once painted on the walls of Vellayamabalam for Young India and they invited us to come for the wall painting session here,” says Mohith, an architecture student. With him were Maria and Akhil, holding a kid each and a box of paint. The theme was ‘I am different’.

Outside the building, professionals from Toonz finished the picture of a child drawing a blue whale and the architecture students painted caricatures of animals. “We had done a similar painting in Vellayambalam as part of beautifying the city and were only happy to do it again for H₂O and be a part of a social cause,” says Sajan, executive member of YI Trivandrum.
