Wildfires Sweep Southern France as European Heatwave Fuels Thousands of Blazes

France records over 2,000 excess deaths during June heatwave as wildfires continue to rage across Europe.

Wildfires driven by an intense heatwave and dry conditions swept across southern France, as soaring temperatures continued to fuel thousands of blazes across Europe, forcing evacuations and prompting large-scale firefighting efforts.

French authorities deployed hundreds of firefighters, aircraft and emergency personnel to battle multiple fires, particularly in the southern regions where strong winds and prolonged drought accelerated the spread of flames. Several residents were evacuated from vulnerable areas as a precaution.

The heatwave, which has gripped much of southern and western Europe, has created ideal conditions for wildfires, with temperatures soaring well above seasonal averages. Authorities warned that the combination of extreme heat, low humidity and gusty winds has significantly increased the risk of new outbreaks.

Meanwhile, France has reported a sharp rise in heat-related deaths. Health Minister Stephanie Rist said there were at least 2,025 more deaths than expected during the week of June 22-28 compared with the previous week, underscoring the deadly impact of the extreme temperatures. She cautioned that the figure remains preliminary and is likely to rise as more data becomes available.

Firefighters have been working around the clock to contain the blazes and prevent them from reaching populated areas, while officials urged residents to avoid activities that could spark additional fires.

The wildfire crisis has affected several European countries, including France, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece, where emergency services remain on high alert amid forecasts of continued hot and dry weather.

Meteorologists warned that climate change is contributing to more frequent and intense heatwaves across Europe, increasing the likelihood of large-scale wildfires during the summer months.
