Russian Region Tatarstan Seeks Deeper Economic Ties With India

Russia’s Tatarstan region seeks to expand trade, investment and cultural cooperation with India, with bilateral trade exceeding $350 million last year.

Russia's oil-rich Tatarstan region is seeking to expand direct trade, investment and cultural cooperation with India, positioning itself as a gateway for Indian companies to Russian and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) markets.

Tatarstan's head, known as the Rais, Rustam Minnikhanov, told the India-Russia Business Forum at the second Tatarstan Initiative Mutual Efficiency (TIME) conference in Kazan that the region was strengthening direct dialogue with India.

He said Tatarstan was an important industrial and agricultural centre, besides being a major oil producer, and that India was among the largest importers of its agricultural products.

Minnikhanov said agreements with Indian states were being implemented and described the opening of India's Consulate General in Kazan and Tatarstan's trade and economic representation in New Delhi as important steps towards expanding bilateral cooperation.

He said the TIME forum had emerged as a platform for strengthening economic and investment relations between India and Russia.

Addressing visiting Indian journalists, Tatarstan Investment Development Agency chief Taliya Minullina highlighted the region's industrial capabilities, including the manufacture of helicopters, aircraft, trucks, passenger vehicles and medical equipment.

She said the region was exploring opportunities to import more Indian products and expand bilateral trade, which exceeded $350 million last year.

Minullina said Tatarstan ranked first in Russia's National Investment Climate Rating and offered significant opportunities for Indian manufacturing companies seeking to establish production facilities.

She described the region as a potential investment gateway for Indian companies targeting markets across Russia and CIS countries.

Beyond trade, Tatarstan is seeking closer cultural ties with India through the promotion of Indian cinema, literary exchanges and visits by Indian authors.

Plans are also underway to establish an Ayurveda centre in the region as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation in traditional medicine.
