Pakistan bans ads on family planning

In a notification, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) directed all the television and radio channels to such ads.

Islamabad: Pakistani authorities have banned airing advertisements and marketing contraceptives and family planning products with immediate effect, officials said.

In a notification, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) directed all the television and radio channels to such advertisements. According to the notification issued, the decision was made after the regulatory authority received several complaints against ‘undesired’ contraceptives commercials being broadcast on the electronic media.

“General public is very much concerned on the exposure of such products to the innocent children, which get inquisitive on features/use of the products,” said the notification, adding that parents have ‘shown apathy’ on the advertisement of such products and demanded a ban on their airing. The regulatory body warned of serious legal actions against any media organisation that failed to follow the new directives on such ads.
