At least 30 people were killed Monday in a day of intense fighting in a town on Myanmar's border with China, authorities said, after rebels dressed in police uniforms launched a surprise raid.

In an official statement, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Geng Shuang said, “Parties concerned should stop fighting immediately so as to prevent the situation from getting worse, and restore normal order in the border areas as soon as possible.”

The clashes are some of the worst to break out in the Chinese-speaking Kokang region since fighting in 2015 left scores dead and forced tens of thousands to flee across the border into China.

The spokesperson said, “The Chinese side supports all measures conducive to peace. Parties concerned should stay committed to peacefully resolving their differences through dialogue and consultation”.

“Since the outbreak of the conflict, some Myanmar residents living in the border areas have crossed over to the Chinese side for safety reasons. The Chinese side has offered them assistance in the spirit of humanitarianism”, reads the statement.

Geng further added that the situation in Northern Myanmar concerns peace and tranquillity in the border areas between China and Myanmar.
