Pakistan: Fire erupts at PIA's engineering department in Karachi
Karachi: A major fire broke out on Saturday at the sensitive precision engineering department of Pakistan's national carrier at the international airport in Karachi, officials said.
The fire started early morning near the Jinnah International Airport, where the engineering facility of Pakistan International Airline (PIA) is located. Heavy contingents of police and Pakistan Rangers arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area.
A number of fire tenders arrived at the scene and were engaged in fire-fighting inside the PIA engineering complex. PIA spokesman Danyal Gilani told media that fire was under control by 1 pm. "No one was injured and the incident has not affected flight operations. There was no major damage to the facility," he said.
He said preliminary investigation showed that it was caused due to short-circuit.
Detailed inquiry has been ordered by PIA Chairman Azam Saigol, he added.
PIA's engineering complex termed as a sensitive area with high security, where the aircraft equipment are manufactured and repaired.
