Pakistan extends military courts' term

Speaker of the National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq chaired sitting of parliamentary leaders in this regard.

Islamabad: Pakistan’s political parliamentary parties, except the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), agreed to extend tenure of military courts for another two years. Speaker of the National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq chaired sitting of parliamentary leaders in this regard.

The military courts were set up in January 2015 for a two year term after a constitutional amendment following a terror attack on an army-run school in Peshawar in December 2014 that killed over 150 people, mostly students.

Since their expiry last month, government has been trying to bring the political parties around the idea of another tenure for military courts. Talking to reporters after the meeting, finance minister Ishaq Dar urged parties not to politicise the issue of military courts.

He said all the political parties had agreed on extension of military courts following new wave of terrorism. PTI’s Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the current situation was threatening Pakistan’s integrity and sovereignty.
