New Delhi: Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing will undertake a five-day visit to India beginning Saturday to explore ways to shore up bilateral ties in a range of areas including trade and defence.
It is the first high-level visit to India from Myanmar after the parliamentary elections were held in the neighbouring country from December to January.
The Myanmar president was scheduled to come to India to attend the International Big Cat Alliance Summit on June 1. His visit was rescheduled as the summit has been deferred.
He will be accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising several cabinet ministers, senior officials and business leaders, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
President U Min Aung Hlaing will hold discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 1 to further strengthening the "historical and civilisational" ties between the two countries, the MEA said.
"As part of the visit, President U Min Aung Hlaing will also travel to Bodh Gaya on May 30 and to Mumbai on June 2 for business and industry interactions and site visits," it said.
Myanmar lies at the confluence of India's Neighbourhood First, Act East and MAHASAGAR policies, it said.
"The official visit of President U Min Aung Hlaing to India is expected to further strengthen and deepen the multi-faceted relations between the two countries," the MEA said in a statement.
