Dubai police drop case against UK woman arrested for reporting her gang rape

The woman was arrested on suspicion of violating the UAE's laws on extramarital sex when she reported her gang rape.

Dubai: Prosecutors in Dubai on Tuesday dropped a case against the British woman who was arrested on the charge of having an extramarital sex' after she reported that two British tourists had raped her in a hotel in October.

According to a report in The Telegraph, the Dubai police dropped the case against the two accused as well, stating that there was insufficient evidence to press charges against the men and the woman.

“The office of Dubai Public Prosecutor has closed the case involving the alleged rape of British national ZJM following careful examination of all evidence,” Dubai authorities said in a statement.

“The Office has decided not to proceed with legal proceedings... A video obtained from the mobile phone of one of the suspects detailing the act was a key evidence that supported this conclusion.”

The 25-year-old woman’s family members have, however, claimed that they have not received any such information. They said she has not yet received her passport, which was confiscated following her arrest.

“Her passport has not been released to her and she has had no update from her case for the past few days. The family are eagerly anticipating news and praying that the reports are true,” the family said in a statement.

The woman, who was on a holiday trip to Dubai last month, had filed a police case against the two men for allegedly raping her.

However, Dubai police had arrested her for violating the UAE’s laws on extramarital sex. She was later released on bail and was staying with an English family.
