Lula Maintains Narrow Lead Over Flavio Bolsonaro In Brazil Poll
Quaest survey shows right-wing challenger closing gap ahead of October presidential election
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva continues to lead Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in the race for October’s presidential election, although the right-wing challenger has narrowed the gap, according to a Quaest poll released Friday.
In a simulated second-round runoff, Lula secured 43% support against 40% for Bolsonaro. An earlier Quaest poll conducted on August 5 had Lula ahead by 44% to 39%.
The latest figures indicate a virtual tie, given the poll’s margin of error of two percentage points.
In a first-round scenario, Lula leads with 38% of the projected vote, followed by Bolsonaro at 31%. Renan Santos and Ronaldo Caiado each received 4%, while Romeu Zema stood at 2%.
Flavio Bolsonaro, a senator and the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, has emerged as the leading right-wing challenger to Lula.
Under Brazil’s electoral system, a candidate must secure more than 50% of valid votes to win outright in the first round. If no candidate reaches that threshold, the two leading candidates advance to a runoff.
The Quaest survey polled 2,004 people between August 10 and 13 and was commissioned by Brazilian media outlet Globo.
