Israel Protesters Demand Netanyahu's Resignation, Seek Unity

Demonstrators take to the streets after an inconclusive election leaves both political blocs short of a parliamentary majority.

Protesters took to the streets of Israel on Thursday, demanding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's resignation and urging opposition leaders to form a joint Jewish-Arab government following an inconclusive election that left both political blocs short of a parliamentary majority.

Demonstrators marched through the city, blocking roads and confronting police officers who moved in to disperse them. Some protesters sat on the road and chanted slogans, while others trampled on campaign posters of Netanyahu.

Some protesters shouted, “Ben Gvir lost!”, referring to far-right politician Itamar Ben-Gvir. A placard written in Hebrew read, “Arabs and Jews – Only together will we win”, reflecting calls for greater political cooperation between Jewish and Arab communities.

The inconclusive election result has left Netanyahu and opposition parties struggling to secure a parliamentary majority, with parties representing Israel's Arab population potentially playing a decisive role in coalition negotiations.

Protesters argued that a government involving both Jewish and Arab parties could offer a way out of the political deadlock. Others carried a banner accusing Israel of being an apartheid state rather than a democracy, highlighting their criticism of the country's political system.

As demonstrators continued marching with megaphones and banners, police maintained a presence along the route. No governing coalition had emerged following the election.
