Faecal bacteria in Starbucks ice

Iced water obtained from Caffe Nero, Starbucks and Costa Coffee all contained faecal coliform bacteria.

Ice from three major coffee chains, including Starbucks, was found to contain bacteria from faeces, according to a BBC investigation. The undercover investigation found that Out of 10 samples, Costa’s seven ice samples were found to be contaminated with bacteria found in faeces. At Starbucks and Nero, three out of 10 contained the bacteria.

Expert Tony Lewis told BBC the levels found were “concerning”. “These should not be present at any level — never mind the significant numbers found,” he said. Last year BBC had found high levels of faecal bacteria in ice from a KFC restaurant in Birmingham.
