London: A mysterious Amazonian monkey has been spotted in the wild for the first time in 80 years.
The Vanzolini bald faced saki with shaggy black hair and golden legs was first seen in 1936. In 1956, a team on an expedition to the Brazilian rainforest found only dead monkeys. During a recent trek, Laura Marsh, director of the Global Conservation Institute, became the first person to see the elusive animal alive in eight decades.
Dr Marsh and a team of scientists, photographers, conservationists, and local guides had set out on a four-month-long expedition into a remote part of the western Amazon, the National Geographic reported.
The animal lacks the prehensile tail of other monkeys and moves more like a cat, Dr Marsh said.
