Syrian war retold in pebbles

Nizar Ali Badr, a 52-year-old Syria-based artist and sculptor, has depicted the ravages of the war in his country in pebbles.

London: The five-year civil war in Syria has killed over 4,50,000 Syrians and over 12 million Syrians — half the country’s population — have been displaced from their homes. A family on the move, their meagre belongings carried on their heads has become a common sight in Syria.

Nizar Ali Badr, a 52-year-old Syria-based artist and sculptor, has depicted the ravages of the war in his country in pebbles. According to BBC, for the past 35 years, Nizar has been going to the beach in Latakia to collect beautiful stones and pebbles of all shapes and sizes.

When the Syrian conflict started in 2011, Nizar saw tragedies unfolding. He began to re-create the things he saw in stone. “I didn’t have a camera. As soon as I finished, I looked at it for some time and then destroyed it to make a new one,” he told BBC.
