Denmark gives man 7 years for travelling to Syria to join ISIS

It was the first such ruling in the Scandinavian country.

Copenhagen: A Danish court has sentenced a 24-year-old pizzeria owner to seven years in jail after he was found guilty of joining ISIS group in Syria, where he claimed he worked as a cook.

The Copenhagen suburban Glostrup City Court said Hamza Cakan should not be stripped of Danish citizenship. He also has a Turkish passport.

He was found guilty on Wednesday of enrolling in the radical ISIS group. It was the first such ruling in the Scandinavian country.

During his trial, Cakan acknowledged traveling twice to Syria in 2013 but said he didn't go there to fight. However, he acknowledged filling in a form saying he had joined ISIS to become a fighter.

He was arrested last year after attempting to go to Syria again.
