Morelia, Michoacan: A Mexican man has been sentenced to 100 years in prison for repeatedly drowning his three-year-old stepdaughter in a swimming pool, leading to her death.
A CCTV footage showed the accused throwing the minor girl into the pool of a hotel in Morelia city in south western state of Michoacan.
According to a report in the Daily Mail, the victim tried to keep herself afloat as her father stood by the edge of the pool and watched her.
The victim made several attempts to reach the edge of the pool and save herself, but her father held her tightly in such a position that she was unable to breathe. Unable to swim, the victim drowned in the pool as other swimmers watched in horror but refused to intervene.
At first, the victim's mother did not realise that her daughter had drowned. Later when she returned to the pool, she was shocked to see her daughter's lifeless body in the pool. The victim was then taken to the hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.
Her mother claimed that she was not aware of her daughter being mistreated and came to know about her husband's actions only after she saw the CCTV footage.
On the basis of the CCTV footage, the accused was convicted of the crime. During the trial, prosecutors demanded a jail term of up to 40 years for the accused. However, after reviewing the CCTV footage, the judge slapped the accused with a more severe punishment -- 100 years in jail.
