UK: 13-day-old baby shaken, twisted and squeezed' to death by father

London: A 13-day-old baby, who died following grievous brain injuries, was deliberately 'shaken, twisted and squeezed’ by his father, a UK court heard on Thursday.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the incident happened in England’s Wolverhampton a year ago.

Paramedics were rushed to the two-bedroom residence of 23-year-old Daniel Sanzone and his 19-year-old girlfriend Zoe Howell, to find a ‘grey and floppy’ baby being administered CPR by his grandmother, while the parents behaved hysterically.

The 999 call mentioned that the baby had suffered a cardiac arrest.

Post mortem reports later revealed that the child had suffered extensive brain damage due to lack of oxygen supply. In addition to broken ribs, scans also revealed multiple fractures in the lower part of the infant’s body, especially in the knee and the ankles.

His 'pupils were continually fixed, dilated and he was just staring’ the doctors revealed.

The doctors concluded that the child was squeezed, twisted and was forcibly gripped.

Describing the brain damage suffered by two-week old Joshua as the most ‘extreme’, consultant neuropathologist Daniel Du Plessis, testifying before the court, said that no part of the child’s brain was spared injury.

“If you look at the whole picture he stopped breathing and his heart stopped because of a traumatic injury on the brain and spine which led to a cardiac arrest which led to brain damage,” the court heard.

Daniel and Zoe reportedly split up two weeks before the incident happened and were reportedly ‘taking a break’.

They shared the house with Zoe’s mother and her partner.

Daniel was alone with Joshua when he suffered the collapse. While Daniel was charged with murder, Zoe was accused of allowing the death of her baby.
