Saudi teen proposes Headscarf emoji
London: As countries across Europe grapple with the issue of the Muslim veil, a Saudi teenaged girl living in Germany has proposed a headscarf emoji.
Rayouf Alhumedhi, 15, has sent a proposal to The Unicode Consortium, a non-profit corporation that reviews and develops new emojis, according to the BBC.
Alhumedhi’s idea has gained the backing of Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of online discussion forum Reddit. If approved, her emoji will be available in 2017, the BBC said. She told the BBC that during a group chat with her friends on social media she had realised there was no emoji to represent her, a headscarf-wearing woman. She read an article on emoji design and decided to write to Unicode about her idea.
A member of a Unicode subcommittee replied, offering to help her draft a formal proposal.
