ISIS targets British tourists in Spain as 'revenge' for air strikes

The Islamic State group has also threatened to behead or kidnap Spaniards in Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Libya.

Madrid: The Islamic State extremist group, also known as ISIS, has threatened revenge for "crimes committed by Spain against Muslims", by targeting British expatriates and holidaymakers in Spain.

A large number of tourists from Britain visit Spain every year to spend their holidays. According to a report by The Sun, a significant hike has been noted in the number of Britishers visiting Spain each year, which poses even greater threat to British nationals.

ISIS has also threatened to behead or kidnap Spaniards in Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Libya.

An article published by Abu Marya Al-Aseefon on ISIS' media channel Al-Wafa, said, "(Spanish soldiers are) still killing Muslims in the eastern and western parts of the Earth, sometimes with bomb-carrying air jets and other times with the direct participation on the ground."

An apparent ISIS operative said, "As their governments kill our brothers, so should we (seek) revenge and reprisal."

Tourists from Britain have come under attack in other parts of the world as well. At least 38 tourists, mostly Britishers, were killed in June last year in a mass shooting at a tourist resort at Port El Kantaoui, near Sousse in Tunisia.

Spain has been ranked a “high threat” destination, joining France, Belgium, Egypt and Turkey, according to the report.
