Gabriel Attal Makes History as France's Youngest and First Openly Gay Prime Minister

France's President Emmanuel Macron appoints 34-year-old Gabriel Attal as the country's youngest and first openly gay head of government

Hyderabad: In a historic move, France's President Emmanuel Macron named Gabriel Attal as the country's newest Prime Minister, making him the youngest and first openly gay head of government. This decision came after Elisabeth Borne resigned from the post, serving less than two years in office and paving the way for an anticipated cabinet reshuffle.

Gabriel Attal, a 34-year-old education minister and a staunch ally of Macron, rose to prominence as the government spokesman during the Covid pandemic. Known for his political savvy and ease in communication, he has become one of the nation's most popular politicians, earning acclaim in radio shows and parliamentary debates.

Being the youngest prime minister and the first openly gay leader in French history, Attal draws comparisons to Macron's ascent in 2017. France MP Patrick Vignal remarked, "Gabriel Attal is a bit like the Macron of 2017," emphasizing their shared trailblazing leadership roles.

Described as "clear" and possessing authority, Attal's selection signals a potential rejuvenation for the government. Emmanuel Macron, facing challenges in a more turbulent parliament since losing his absolute majority in 2022, aims to bolster the administration's effectiveness by aligning with Attal. However, opposition leaders argue that Macron will continue to wield significant decision-making power.
