More Danes want a referendum on EU membership: poll

42 percent of the 1,215 people interviewed want a vote on Denmark's EU membership.

Copenhagen: As Britain gets ready for its referendum on the European Union, an opinion poll in Denmark suggests a growing number of Danes also want to vote on whether to quit the EU.

The Epinion survey published Thursday by Danish broadcaster DR said 42 percent of the 1,215 people interviewed want a vote on Denmark's EU membership. That was up from 37 percent in a previous poll in February.

The May 17-24 survey said 44 percent support continued EU membership while 37 percent would quit the 28-country bloc. The rest were undecided.

No margin of error was given. Denmark joined the bloc in 1973 with Britain and Ireland, but has opted out of parts of EU treaties for fear of losing sovereignty.

The center-right government has no plans for a referendum.
