UK mother suffocates five-month-old to death, admitted to psychiatric hospital

Basque, Labourd: French police have arrested a mother for allegedly suffocating her five-month-old baby to death. The accused, whose mental condition seems to have been affected, has been admitted to a psychiatric asylum.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the child was discovered dead by the accused's husband when he woke up in the morning, who then informed the police.

The incident took place at the accused's holiday home in Saint-Pee-sur-Nivelle, a village in the Basque province of Labourd.

During investigation, police questioned the entire family, including the 42-year-old accused, whose identity has been withheld for legal reasons.

The initial inquiry led police to believe that the mother might be guilty, following which they launched a probe. When the accused did not give satisfactory answers and behaved in a weird manner, police suggested taking her to a doctor for checkup. Medical reports of the accused stated that she needed to be admitted to the hospital.

Police said that it was difficult for them to say whether the accused intentionally suffocated her baby or not, due to her mental instability. An autopsy of the baby is scheduled for next week.
