Unlesss they opt out, all French are organ donors
Medical teams will check the register at the time of death before considering organ or tissue removal.
London: Every French citizen has automatically become an organ donor unless they decide to opt out, due to a change in the law.
The Independent reported that a new rules, which came into effect on January 1, aligned France’s policy with other European countries like Spain and Austria, where “presumed consent” means anyone can become a donor of organs and tissues when they die unless they specifically choose not to.
Those who do not want all or any of their organs to be used must now put their name on a “refusal register” or the National Rejection Register.
Medical teams will check the register at the time of death before considering organ or tissue removal. Over 1,50,000 people have already signed up to the register, the Guardian said.
