Turkey: 2 women hurl hand grenade, fire at police

The two attackers escaped the scene in a vehicle and were hiding inside a building some distance from the police station.

Istanbul: Two female attackers on Thursday opened fire and hurled a hand grenade at police outside of a riot police station in Istanbul, Turkish media reports said. One of the assailants was believed to have been wounded when police returned fire.

The state-run Anadolu Agency said the two attackers escaped the scene in a vehicle and were hiding inside a building some distance from the police station. Police have surrounded the building and are preparing to launch an operation to catch them, Anadolu said.

Dogan news agency showed what appeared to be security camera footage of the two women firing at a police bus and throwing a hand grenade at it, before apparently aiming at the police station. No police officer was injured in the attack, according to state-run TRT television.

The motive of the attack was not known but both Kurdish rebels and militants of a far-left organization have attacked police in the past.
