Tensions between Colombia and the United States have sharply escalated after a recent US military operation in Venezuela resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, prompting a war of words between Colombian President Gustavo Petro and US President Donald Trump.
Following the capture of Maduro, Trump publicly threatened possible military action against Colombia, branding Petro “very sick” and accusing his government of involvement with drug trafficking — claims vehemently denied by Bogota.
In response, Petro defiantly challenged Trump, declaring, “Come get me, I am waiting for you,” in a social media post that underscored his rejection of US threats and support for Colombia’s sovereignty.
The diplomatic row comes amid broader regional unease over the US intervention in Venezuela, drawing concern from neighbouring countries over potential spillover effects.
Despite the biting rhetoric, Colombian officials have stressed continued cooperation with the United States on combating drug trafficking, even as the diplomatic relationship frays.
The standoff highlights growing strains in US–Latin America relations as Washington’s aggressive actions in the region fuel political friction and challenge long-standing alliances.
