Sydney: A Myanmarese migrant who raped a 10-year-old boy in the Australian city of Sydney, pleaded not guilty stating that he thought it was not a crime as it was acceptable in his homeland.
While the case was under trial in Sydney's Downing Centre Court, the 20-year-old accused, Mufiz Rahaman, told the court that he did not know sexually abusing anyone was morally wrong.
According to a report in the Daily Mail, the court heard that the accused, the victim and his father, along with a group of refugees, were staying together in vacant RSL club in Lakemba, southwest of Sydney.
During the trial, prosecutors told the court that the minor victim was alone in his bedroom when Rahaman sneaked in. As the minor boy slept, Rahaman took off his underpants and raped him.
When the victim woke up and tried to resist, Rahaman told him, "I'll give you money for this."
Meanwhile, the boy's father returned and found Rahaman lying on top of his son naked with his pants on the bed. When he confronted Rahaman, the accused denied any wrongdoing and left the room. A police complaint was registered later and Rahaman was taken into custody.
A medical examination of the victim was conducted, following which the DNA reports revealed that Rahaman's semen was found around the private parts of the boy.
The court ruled that the accused failed to understand that his actions would leave a psychological as well as physical impact on the victim.
Rahaman has been sentenced to five years in jail with a non-parole period of three years.
