Iraqi troops torture, execute 3 ISIS terrorists, incident captured on video
Mosul: A video which has recently surfaced online shows 3 ISIS terrorists being tortured and executed by Iraqi forces.
According to a report on Daily Mail, the forces paraded the terrorists through the streets before killing them. While one ISIS militant was dragged by the foot before being shot, another victim was kicked by a soldier.
The disturbing video also showed one of the soldiers shooting a militant and stamping his head even after he was dead.
Deeply perturbed by the violence in the clip, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) on Saturday has asked the Iraqi government to conduct a probe into the video.
Notably, the video surfaced shortly before eastern Mosul was declared free from the presence of the Islamic State by Iraq’s prime minister Haider al-Abadi.
The militants were forced out of the region by the army which was one of their last strongholds in the country. However, there are around 750,000 people still under the clutches of the Islamic State in the western region.
In his weekly conference on Tuesday, Al-Abadi was reported to have appreciated the effort of the security forces in driving out the militants and also thanked the public for their support.
Using the Arabic acronym for the militant group, he was quoted as saying, “Daesh has quickly collapsed and no one expected such collapse. The heroism of our security forces was behind Daesh's defeat.”
He further added that the forces are capable of liberating the western side and will do so, without mentioning a time frame.
Al-Abadi also reiterated his promise to investigate claims of human rights violations by security forces and take necessary action.
Mosul is Iraq’s second-largest city and the last urban stronghold of ISIS. The terrorist group has occupied the city and established a parallel government there since 2014.
