China: An extreme high security prison in China has installed a high-tech guard in every cell. The Yancheng prison, which is completely run by the country’s Ministry of Justice, has installed cameras in all the cells in a lavish attempt to use AI (Artificial Intelligence) to monitor all the inmates.
The system, tentatively named as ‘smart jail’ system involves a network of hidden sensors and surveillance cameras throughout the prison.
The cameras and the whole system is designed in such a way that it will monitor every prison inmate and hand in hand flag anything that will seem shady and unusual, according to a report by South China Morning Post. The sensors and cameras will use facial recognition and body movement analysis to monitor convicts.
Meng Qingbiao, the project representative, briefly explained the purpose of the system to South China Morning Post. He said, “For instance, if an inmate is spotted pacing up and down in a room for some time, the machine may regard that as suspicious and will notify the guards to go and check the inmate personally.”
Experts insist that such advanced technology will make prison breaks almost impossible. Even if the guards are bribed by the convicts, they will not be able to stop the system from triggering the alarm.
Qingbiao further stressed that the new cutting edge technology allows each camera to track as many as 200 faces at the same time. With this, even if the prisoners are able to blend in the crowd, they will never be able to slip away completely.
“Prison breaks will be a thing of the past. They will be history.”...
