No new summit planned with Kim, clarifies US President Donald Trump

Trump said their much-anticipated second summit ended without an agreement because he was not willing to drop sanctions.

Hanoi: US President Donald Trump has not agreed to another summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, he said on Thursday after their second meeting ended in Hanoi with no concrete progress and no deal on denuclearisation.

When asked if a third summit had been agreed with Kim, Trump told reporters: "No we haven't... we'll see if it happens." He added further sanctions on North Korea were not necessary.

Trump told reporters he does not "want to talk about increasing sanctions. They're strong, there are a lot of great people in North Korea that have to live also".

Trump said their much-anticipated second summit ended without an agreement because he was not willing to drop sanctions.

Trump ‘expressed regret’ at not striking a deal with Kim Jong Un, in a phone call with South Korean President Moon Jae-in after the talks, the South's presidential office said on Thursday.

“While President Trump expressed regret that he didn't reach an agreement at the Hanoi summit, he made clear his resolve to solve the issue with North Korea through dialogue," a statement from the presidential Blue House said.

Moon suggested he and Trump meet in person soon to continue discussions on the subject, and Trump agreed, the statement added.

From the outset, the president had appeared to downplay expectations of an immediate breakthrough in nuclear talks, saying he was in "no rush" to clinch a rapid deal.
