US Issues Notice on 50% Tariffs for Indian Goods
Steel, aluminium and their derivatives will only be subjected to sectoral tariffs of 25 per cent

The US administration has issued a notice confirming the implementation of a 50 per cent tariff on India from Wednesday. Unless US President Donald Trump makes a last-minute U-turn or provides an unexpected extension, the penalty tariff will become effective from Wednesday.
The US Department of Homeland Security issued a notice to effectuate the President’s Executive Order 14329 of August 6, 2025, which imposed a specified rate of duty on imports of articles that are products of India. “He determined that it is necessary and appropriate to impose an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 per cent on imports of articles of India, which is directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil,” it said.
The duties will be effective with respect to products of India that are entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time on August 27, 2025.
Products that were already loaded on a ship and in transit to the US before 12:01 am (EDT) on August 27, 2025 will be exempted provided they are cleared for use in the country or taken out of a warehouse for consumption before 12:01 am (EDT) on September 17, 2025.
Steel, aluminium and their derivatives will only be subjected to sectoral tariffs of 25 per cent. Automobiles and auto parts too will have 25 per cent tariffs. Humanitarian relief goods, and informational materials, including publications, films, posters, phonograph records, photographs, microfilms, microfiche, tapes, compact disks, CD ROMs, artworks, and news wire feeds also are exempted from 50 per cent tariff.
Antidumping, countervailing, or other duties, taxes, fees, exactions and charges that are applicable to each product will remain.
